‘Loch Ness-style monsters sighted’ in Chinese lake

BEIJING – A REPORTER claims to have discovered China’s version of the Loch Ness monster, state press reported yesterday.
Mr Zhuo Yongsheng shot 20 minutes of footage showing six creatures in the north-eastern Tianchi lake – near China’s border with North Korea – which local legend has long said is home to Loch Ness-style monsters.

‘They could swim as fast as yachts and at times they would all disappear in the water,’ Xinhua news agency quoted Mr Zhuo as saying. He described them as seal-like, finned creatures. ‘Their fins, or maybe wings, were longer than their bodies.’

China’s version of Scotland’s legendary monster is said to have dwelled in the murky bottom of the 373m-deep volcanic lake for over a century. Tianchi, or the Lake of Heaven, is in Mount Changbaishan, a nature reserve in the north-eastern Jilin province.

The original ‘Nessie’ dates back to the 7th century, when a water beast is said to have appeared before Saint Columba, the founder of Christianity in Scotland, in the Highland lake’s depths.

Mr Zhuo, director of a local TV station run by the administration office of Mount Changbaishan, has sent electronic pictures of the ‘Nessies’ to Xinhua’s Jilin provincial bureau.

One showed six ‘black dots’ swimming in parallel in three pairs, while another featured them huddled together.

Mr Zhuo, who shot the video and photos early last Thursday, said he did not believe the lake monster legend previously, ‘but I believed my own eyes’.

But scientists say the lake is too cold for life, and volcanic eruptions would make life extremely hazardous for any animal making its home there.
