Whenever there’s talk about “bashing villains” [打 小 人], the most common image that arises would be a picture of old women holding wooden clogs, clobbering at “little men” made of paper under a bridge in Hong Kong. However, according to Taoist Master Fong, there’s another way to “bash villains” in Tao history books…

“Bashing Villains” is a form of black arts?
In the way of Tao, “bashing villains” is actually made possible through a medium performing a ritual, in order to punish “villains” who are back-stabbers and such unsavoury characters around you. Hence, it is also known as a form of curse, or black arts that deals out hexes.

The origins of this infamous curse – “bashing villains”.
“Bashing villains” first originated from the Tang Dynasty. At the time, it was known as the “Hate Curse” or “Victory over Hatred”, and not “Bashing villains”. This black art of the common folks, is said to get its power from the deities and cultivated as a form of hex to punish villains.

When is the best time to “bash villains”?
There is a saying that all wandering spirits would gather together during the “Ghost Festival” (1st of July on the Chinese Almanac), and that is the best time to perform the “bash villain” ritual with so many ‘helpers’ on the loose. However, some also say that a period in the almanac called “Awakening of Insects” [驚 蟄] that falls on the 19th of January (in the Chinese Almanac), is the best time to perform the ritual. When old women (usually mediums) perform the ritual under the bridge, they often have a number of candles, food and wooden clogs at hand.

3 best ways to perform the ritual.
      1. Hitting the villain with a bamboo.
      2. Poking needles into a straw puppet.
      3. Old woman hitting the villain.

Is this ritual a form of releasing pent-up stress?
Some of us thinks that the “bashing villain” ritual is only a form of releasing stress, and that it does not yield any practical results. But if that is so, why are there still many of us who believes in it? And if it is to release pent-up stress in ourselves, will it work if we do the ritual ourselves, and not through a medium?
